The course has the aim to understand of the current status of the international system, proceeding through the classical theories of IR to contemporary approaches and debates. It moreover seeks to understand how people are provided, or not provided, with the basic values of security, freedom, order, justice, and welfare.
The course provides, firstly, an introduction to the basic IR classical theories (Realism, Liberalism, Marxism, Constructivism) with a specific attention to the principal theoretical paradigms, methodologies and to the challenges of policy analysis. The second part of the program will be dedicated to a critical overview of the main theories that have characterized the contemporary debate. Throughout the whole course, special attention will be given to the actors of the international system, to their interactions and to the understanding of foreign affairs. The course will be enriched thanks to some lectures given by experts and through case studies’ analysis of some contemporary crises. The course also emphasizes skill development, through an array of written and oral exercises and team activities.
